How to choose an abaya: fabrics, cuts and price bands explained
A practical guide to picking an abaya that flatters, lasts, and travels well — with an honest breakdown of what you actually get at each price band.
The abaya is deceptively simple: one silhouette, endless variations. The differences that matter are drape, weight, and finishing — not the label.
Choose the fabric for the season
Nida crepe is the workhorse — matte, opaque, drapes well and hides creases. Perfect for daily wear.
Chiffon and georgette feel airy and photograph beautifully but need a slip underneath and gentler handling.
Linen and cotton-linen breathe best in heat but wrinkle; look for pre-washed finishes.
Cut and length
A closed-front A-line suits most heights. Open-front designs need a coordinating inner. Sleeves should sit at the wrist bone; hems 1cm off the floor prevents fraying.
Price bands, honestly
Under £40 — fine for occasional wear; expect thinner nida and simpler seams.
£40–£90 — the sweet spot for everyday abayas: heavier drape, French seams, better zips.
£90+ — worth it for embroidered occasion pieces and heavier crepe weights.
